Campagna Motors, a Canadian manufacturer that specializes in three-wheelers, is launching a new model powered by a BMW motorcycle engine. Called the T-REX 16S, it joins Campagna's other three-wheelers, the Kawasaki-powered T-REX 14R and T-REX 14RR and V13R which has a Harley-Davidson engine.
The T-REX 16S is powered by a 1.6-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine supplied by BMW Motorrad. Developing 160 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 129 lb-ft (175 Nm) of torque at 5,250 rpm, the engine is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox that sends power to the chain-driven rear wheel.
Not only did BMW ship its engine to Canada, it has also sent engineers to work with Campagna on integrating the powerplant and transmission, new electronic systems and other components.
Even though it sounds and works like a motorcycle, the Campagna T-REX 16S has a car-like interior, fitted with a steering-wheel, two waterproof seats, an 180-watt RMS Alpine audio system with iPod/iPhone/USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and Sirius satellite radio. There's even an open glove compartment in the dashboard, with cargo space available under the hood and in two side-cases offering 46 liters each.
The two-seater shares its exterior dimensions with Campagna’s other T-REX models (3,500 mm long, 1,981 mm wide and 1,067 mm tall) and has very similar styling.
Campagna hasn’t yet released specs for the T-REX 16S, but performance should be slightly inferior to that of the more powerful T-REX 14R/RR, which sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 3.92 seconds and reaches a top speed of 230 km/h (144 mph) thanks to its 197-hp Kawasaki engine.
Pricing hasn’t been announced, but since the T-REX 14R starts at $59,999, the BMW-powered model could cost even more.
