Porsche Teases 991-Based GT3 Cup Racer, Road-Going 911 GT3 Must Be Close

|

If there’s one thing we know about Porsche is that, no matter how many SUVs or sporty saloons it may churn out, it will never tinker with the trusted, 50-year old 911 philosophy. Truth be told, it did try to kill it once, back in the 1970s with the 928, but it failed – so it was a lesson it must have learned well. That recipe isn’t just about maintaining the iconic shape and the flat-six engine hung out behind the rear axle; it’s also about launching a whole bunch of new variants of each generation.
We’ve already seen the Cabriolet and the all-wheel drive, so it’s about time for something new. It’s time for the GT3, the variant aimed at hardcore customers who value thrills more than open-top motoring and AWD security and embrace the “less-is-more” philosophy.
Camouflaged prototypes have being caught in the wild by our lenses and there’s been a lot of talk about whether the 991-based GT3 would still have a manual gearbox or ditch it in favor of the PDK dual-clutch semi-auto.
Today, however, Porsche released a short video previewing “a very special 911”. The teaser is less than a minute long and the camera keeps moving around all the time but it does show the non-too-subtle “GT3 Cup” decals that adorn the sides of what is clearly a race-spec 991.
Given that the Cup cars are based on the production GT3, this means that the day we’ll see the 991-based model, which if you remove the racing elements, will be all but identical, must be close.
You can watch the video right after the jump.
