The all-new 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which replaces the outgoing W221 model, is one of the most important cars of the year, for the entire automotive world. This is why the fact that the German automaker has released the first photos of the flagship's interior has really riled us up – we were not expecting them to show anything until (or very shortly before) the car's official reveal date of May 15.
Still, the photos are darkly lit and not all details are clearly visible – the ambient LED lighting is emphasized in this batch of images. The design of the interior is not a massive departure from what the old car offered, but it is a considerably more modern-looking place to sit.
Thankfully, it does away with hard edges and corners, and everything just seems to meld into everything else, but not in a bad way – far from it. The wood trim on the dash fascia seamlessly continues onto the door, forming a very noticeable curve, which improves the feeling of space inside.
It also features a huge 12.3-inch display, in place of the conventional analog dials, which it fully replaces. This was foretold by the W221 model, which already had a display instead of the regular speedo, and turned into a viewing module for the night-vision camera.
Aside from the usual assortment of luxury features, the new S-Class gets an active scenting system, which ionizes and cleans the air, then scents it before sending it into the cabin. Heated, cooled and massaging electric seats are now the norm, but the S-Class also gets reclining rear seats (43.5 degrees). What's interesting is that the rotational direction of the seat cooling fans can be reversed – this somehow improves the comfort level.
However, enough with the jibber-jabber. Check out the official photo gallery after the jump and see all of the above, and more, for yourself.
