Joining the regular models of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup at the Detroit auto show is the revised version of the range-topping SRT that drops the '8' from its name, while gaining important upgrades including a cosmetic makeover, a new 8-speed auto, and significantly improved towing capacity. On the outside, the new 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT is treated to the same visual enhancements as the regular Grand Cherokee such as the new Chrysler 300-style headlamps, redesigned LED taillights and a re-sculptured tailgate, and then some more.
In particular, there's an SRT specific upper-front black grille, black bezels for the standard, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, a new front bumper, plus a different rear spoiler and alloy wheels.
The same more or less applies for the interior where the SRT features a more premium-looking T-handle shifter for the automatic gearbox, a redesigned SRT-exclusive three-spoke, heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, a revised center console that houses a new 8.4-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system and a different instrument panel with a 7-inch customizable display.
While keeping the outgoing SRT8's 6.4-liter HEMI V8 rated for 470 horsepower (351kW) at 6,000 rpm and 465 lb.-ft. (630 Nm) of torque at 4,300 rpm, Jeep replaced the 5-speed auto with a new 8-speed automatic transmission and increased the SUV's towing capacity by an impressive 44 percent to 7,200 pounds (3,265kg).
Other upgrades include a new Eco Mode that optimizes the transmission’s shift schedule and extends the range of 'Fuel Saver Technology', which deactivates four cylinders when conditions allow, and a new launch control system controlled by a button behind the T-handle shifter on the center console.
Jeep says it has made software improvements to the retuned Selec-Track system to further distinguish the five dynamic modes (Auto, Sport, Tow, Track, and Snow), while there's also a Track Mode, which transfers 70 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels for a sportier driving experience.
